Taxidermy demands a wide variety of tools, but perhaps the most useful, necessary and most often used is a knife. An ordinary kitchen knife can be used, but it is more sensible to buy a quality skinning knife that will take and keep a sharp cutting edge.

A very common mistake is to get a knife that has a blade that is way too long. A four to five inch blade is adequate. A longer knife can be awkward and harder to use. Also the added bulk and length serve no purpose.

A skinning knife with a thin, straight and firm blade is better than a hunting knife. A hunting knife is usually thicker and has a heavier blade. Skinning knives also hold their sharp edge better.

I want to stress the importance of the fact that nt one knife, no matter how good the quality, is better than the care and maintanance it receives. Putting a sharp edge on the blade takes time and know how.

You can also test how sharp a knife is by pulling the blade of the knife across a smooth piece of plastic. A very sharp knife will grab into the plastic where a dull knife will glide over tha surface of the plastic. Also a sharp knife will shave the hair off of your arm. Just be careful not to cut yourself attempting this.

Taxidermy Knives

As with any job, you want to use the right tool. Cutting the cape of your trophy or fleshing the skin both take specific knives or tools. A small amount of personal preference does play a part in the decision of which tool to use. If you aren't comfortable using a scalpel then you might prefer a knife.

If you are a beginner or are just short on funds you might want to pass on the more expensive fleshing machines on the market. As you progress you will have to make that choice when the time comes.

Many taxidermist make their own boards to flesh on. You can of course buy pre-made boards but there is a sense of satisfaction when you make your own. Of course that means it is customized to your need too. One tool you should not be without is a skife knife. You will find it useful on every trophy you work on.

You are ultimately in control of which taxidermy knives you choose. If you ask 10 different taxidermist they will most likely use 10 different knives. Keep in mind that as your skills improve you will want to upgrade your taxidermy knives.

The art of taxidermy has moved forward by jumps and bounds recently. These advances have been basically due to people bonding together to share info that used to be a heavily protected secret. In the beginning of taxidermy there were no books, dvds or colleges. The sole way an individual could learn the art of taxidermy was thru random attempt, plenty of research, and with luck a best friend ready to share the data.

Without this help in the learning stage most folks will give in on taxidermy. But as taxidermy developed in the information age, so did the provision of learning material. Today, new taxidermist can contact a number of providers that have fulltime taxidermists on staff to answer queries. They can also call on the help of state and national associations, which are generally more than pleased to help a new taxidermist. There are a number of books and videosa available too.

So thanks to all the taxidermists who are prepared to share their taxidermy knowledge.
